Nationally-known artist Michael Haynes has a deep fascination with the history of the early Western frontier. His recent series on the Pony Express provides a visual record of the exciting journeys and hardships of the Pony Express riders. Haynes’ work is based on extensive research, and his series of paintings depicts the adventures of these riders and the country they rode through. The Albrecht-Kemper is pleased to showcase selections from this series (including the preliminary sketch for “Patee House Transfer”) to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Pony Express.

Quest for the Greater Good: A Citizens Perspective on Nationhood and American Identity during the Civil War

On view in the Barclay Gallery

This small exhibition, including artworks from the 1860s, has been designed to complement Saint Joseph’s commemoration of the 150th anniversaries of the Pony Express and the Civil War. Chosen images from the permanent collection will visually tell the story of America’s struggle for freedom during this challenging time of our nation’s history. These artworks reflect personal and profound sentiments about the war that touched all Americans. They illuminate the principles of democracy both in constitutional law and in daily life. An accompanying exhibition brochure and text panels will also help visitors to better understand the historical context and narratives depicted in the works.
