Debra Payne’s work brings the viewer into her layered, colorful world. She creates her landscapes by observing the spaces and vistas around her, often beginning work while still in the landscape. These images are built through layers of color and texture to evoke inviting scenes. “Like a gardener arranging the space in which they live, I apply paint on canvas in my pursuit to please the eye, “ Payne says her oil paintings.
John Thein, Associate Professor of Art at Creighton University, has created a series of paintings that explore and memorialize the events surrounding the Wounded Knee Massacre. As he explains:
“These paintings are a visual memorial to the massacre at Wounded Knee, South Dakota on December 29, 1890. The massacre broke the spirit of what was called the Ghost Dance movement. The Ghost Dance was a religious movement founded on the vision, prophecies and non-violent teachings of Wovoka, a northern Paiute Indian. It gave voice and hope to Indians of many nations, when treaty after treaty was broken and the Indian way of life shattered. The Ghost Dance religious movement and the culminating massacre speak to our great failures in understanding, communication and social injustices that exist between peoples and this case nations. The results of such failures were and are disastrous.”
