JUNE 14 – SEPTEMBER 8, 2019
American art collecting has witnessed a revitalization in the last thirty to forty years. This exhibition is the first in a series of exhibitions at the museum that highlight the art collections of Americans in order to consider the impetus for process of collecting; the significance of gathering similar or disparate artwroks; and how the objects in these collections adopt new meaning when assembled together. This is particularly important as some Americans eschewed a traditional interest in Western art and began to collect from around the world. The impressive Sabates African Collection represents a diverse swath of African locations, peoples, mediums, and themes. This will be the first time that the collection is shown publicly.
The public is invited to meet the artists at an Opening Reception on Friday, June 14, 2019, from 4-7 pm. There is no charge to attend the Opening.
