A program on Elizabeth Layton will be presented by Don Lambert in the theater at the Albrecht-Kemper on April 30th. Lambert was a 27 year-old newspaper reporter for the Ottawa Herald, Ottawa, Kansas, when he saw two of Layton’s drawings at Ottaniversity, the small college there.

“I was mesmerized by those two drawings,” Lambert recalled. “When I llearned they had been done by a 68 year-old taking her first and only art course, I realized she would make a good story to write for the Herald.”

His “discovery” became far more than a single story. He made it his mission to get her drawings exhibited across the country. They have now been in more than 200 art museums and centers, including the Smithsonian in 1992, one year before her death. Lambert wrote many stories about her and arranged for her coverage in the likes of Life, People and Parade Magazine, as well as on National Public Radio and Good Morning America.

“Her works included in this exhibit at the Albrecht-Kemper reflect her concerns about being a woman and growing old,” Lambert explained. “And some are her social statements which are as important today as they were when she drew about them. One, “Niclear Scream” is her self-portrait as she faces nuclear explosions around her, frantically realizing she had done noting about the nuclear threat when she had the chance. Another, “Bag Lady” is her self-portrait as a bag lady, trying to come in from the cold. Layton’s statement about this drawing was that anyone could become a “bag lady” or homeless person if circumstances shifted due to the economy, marital status or mental or physical health.

“What she did in her drawings,” Lambert explained, “Is put herself in the shoes of ‘others.’ As we look at those drawings, we put ourselves in those shoes, too, as we examine our own aging, our own thoughts about the world around us.”

Layton had been drawing for only a couple of months when she realized that by drawing, she had cured manic depression she had been battling for 30 years. She had gone through electric shock treatments and had been treated with anti-depressant drugs. But it had been through drawing that she had cured herself. She became a national symbol of recovery and hope.

“I am pleased that Elizabeth’s drawings will be at the Albrecht-Kemper again and that I’ll be telling her story there again,” Lambert said, “Because that museum was one of the first to recognize her talents and exhibit her drawings.”

Lambert, who now lives in Kansas City, initiated and organized the other special exhibit at the Albrecht-Kemper, “Color Me Bold” which is the fiber works, paintings and sculptures of two longtime Kansas City artists, Gabriella Mountain and Janet Kuemmerlein.
