Artist Statement

Just as we must live in both a “real” world and in the world of our minds and imaginations, my work interlaces what I see and what I imagine. I strive to find the link between reality and my inner being. My mission is to create daring, dynamic, and vivid visual experiences that inspire ideas about the world people see around them. Building a visual tapestry by collecting a texture, a shape, a color, or a particularly nice line is a powerful tool in my art making. The constant transformations that occur over the course of creating inspire me to observe the extraordinary in the ordinary. The use of encaustic wax and mixed media in my art practice allows me to explore layers of translucency that becomes part of the tapestry of what I reveal or conceal. When I enter my studio, I entwine what I have captured, glimpsed, or noticed from the corner of my eye. The evolutionary path I travel with each image is a unique perplexity. The revelations that are unveiled surprise and delight.

Robin VanHoozer is an artist, painter, and maker of unusual things. Residing in St. Joseph, Missouri and raised with a background rich in nature and history, her work displays a love of dynamic movement and vivid color. Robin has experience as being both artist and art educator. After thirty-one years as both art teacher and artist, Robin retired from teaching in 2013 to make her artistic work her full-time career. Robin’s painting finds the link between the reality of the outside world and the inner being. This ability to connect daring vision and spontaneous imagination is displayed through her creations. Robin received her MA in Studio Art /Painting from the University of Missouri in Kansas City. She is a 2017 Kansas City Artist INC Advance alum. Robin has exhibited locally throughout the Midwest as well as nationally in Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, and Washington, DC.  Robin’s installation Echoes Through Time was the subject of her 2019 solo exhibition at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph, Missouri.
