This month our theme is all things nature! We are thrilled to be hosting the MWSU faculty music recital for violin & piano featuring Dr. Po Sim Head/Dr. Fanny (pianist) and Yi-Miao Huang (Violinist). We will also have representatives from the Missouri Conservation Department sharing conservation artwork.
The theme of our program is Nature. In this violin and piano performance, we are featuring pieces written by composers from different parts of the world and different periods, including Beethoven’s “Spring” Sonata, Florence Price’s The Deserted Garden, Mayumi Kato’s Language of Flowers, and many more.
- Dr. Fanny (Po Sim Head) is a passionate pianist and musicologist who is particularly interested in rediscovering and featuring the compositions of lesser-known musicians. Prior to her doctorate degree in Piano Performance from the University of Kansas, she earned a bachelor’s degree in music composition from Hong Kong Baptist University, and master’s degrees in Piano Performance and Musicology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Dr. Fanny is active in academia and frequently presents at various music conferences. Her articles have been featured in academic journals as well as in an online classical magazine, www.Interlude.hk. With over 20 years of teaching experience, Dr. Fanny has helped her students become active participants in piano recitals, festivals, and competitions. She is an active member of local music teacher associations and is often invited to judge local and international competitions.
- Originally from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Yi-Miao Huang is currently a Doctorate candidate at the University of Kansas, where she studies with Dr. David Colwell. She holds a Master of Music degree from UMKC, and a Bachelor of Music degree from Taipei National University of Arts. Yi-Miao has appeared as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player in countries in Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. She attended music festivals worldwide, including Asian Youth Orchestra in Hong Kong, International Music Workshop and Festival in Germany, Kent/Blossom Music Festival and Miami Music Festival in the US. In addition, Yi-Miao has collaborated with today’s pop musicians including Amy Grant, Michael Bublé, and Kristin Chenoweth, to name a few. Yi-Miao currently serves as a violinist at the Omaha Symphony and Des Moines Symphony, and holds teaching positions at the Missouri Western State University and the Omaha Conservatory.
