Master Copy Painting With Debra Keirce

  • Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art 2818 Frederick Avenue Saint Joseph, MO, 64506 United States (map)

Debra Keirce has long been inspired by the master oil painters of old. Spend three whole days with her, learning the process she uses to create realistic artwork, based on the successes of generations. In this workshop, Debra shares everything - the basics, the essential skills, and even the techniques some of us may not master in our lifetimes. Students will learn what to look for, and how to go about creating copies of master paintings. But it won't stop there. Everyone will be encouraged to take this knowledge and build upon it, laying the foundation for future successful paintings.

In this 3 day workshop, we will take a deep delve into the ways we all can learn from master oil painters of the past. By studying their marks and the decisions that are now their legacy, we will work toward these goals:

Day 1: We will discuss the various things to look and plan for when composing and starting a painting. Beginning with key elements, we can easily plan to either copy the work, or use specific parts of it to create our own versions inspired by it. We'll do some studies and experiments that will help us notice things we may have otherwise overlooked when trying to copy a master painting.

Day 2: We'll delve into the basic concepts, and begin an actual copy of a painting. The hope is that you can apply what we do this day to future artworks, no matter the subject. Whether you paint people, pets, architecture, landscapes, seascapes or still life, the principles are the same.

Day 3: We should be able to finish a significant portion of our master copy - at least enough to be able to attempt more complicated projects in the future. Everyone will leave with hands on instruction for how to go about creating their own masterpieces.

At the end of the workshop, you will have learned the steps essential to creating realistic art. You can continue to practice them the way I teach, or you can explore ways to incorporate them into your own process, with different subjects and media.

We will be working from photographs for this workshop. This is a painting workshop, and I don't want you to be distracted by drawing mistakes. So, we will work from drawings I provide for you.

We will work on master copies of the following three artworks,
Winslow Homer's Breezing Up (A Fair Wind)
Bernt Gronvold's Lite Barn i Grass
Caspar David Friedrich's Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog
