4-7pm
Three women present artwork in ways you may never have experienced. Denise Horne-Kaplan loves the intimacy of miniature pastels and watercolors. They invite you to lean in closer. Debra credits her practice in miniature paintings to improving her oil paintings of all sizes. Brenda Morgan loves to use miniature techniques at the start of all her works. Getting a tiny part right sets the tone for the rest of her oils.
Miniature paintings are defined by the Miniature Artists of America as 25 square inches or less, and 1/6 actual life size or less. They are also painted in "the spirit of miniature." This means they are painted in a way that pays homage to centuries of artists, beginning with the scribes in the medieval ages. Miniature artists strive to fill their art with stories, emotions, and visuals that defy the small space they occupy.
Small format paintings are 14 inches or less. By definition, miniature pieces are a type of small format painting. By displaying miniature and small format artwork together, patrons can see the differences in the two genres. It's actually more labor intensive to paint tiny scenes in miniature, than it is to paint small format works in a looser style.
Enjoy the highly detailed classical realism in this exhibition of 14 inches and under by the Artists Painting Stories group.
Following the opening reception, guests are invited to join us in the auditorium for a live music performance by jazz band Urban Forum. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by clicking the button below.
